Named after Ignacij Borštnik, a founder of modern theatre in Slovenia, the Maribor Theatre Festival is the oldest, most prestigious, and most prominent theater festival in the country.
The festival was launched in 1966, and ever since then it was organized with the idea of promoting and supporting the Slovenian theater scene and bringing the local theaters to Maribor. In 1996, the Slovene National Theatre Maribor was established, and, ever since, the Theatre Festival was held and organized by the very same institution.
The program of the festival usually covers several topics and it includes a competitive program for Slovenian theatre performances, as well as an international program. The Theatre Festival has recently added a international aspect to the event, bringing international guests and theater groups to Maribor, which is opening a whole new dimension to this traditional national event.
The festival awards the Borštnik Ring, the highest accolade for theatre actors in Slovenia; other Borštnik Awards are given for the best achievements in directing, acting, and other categories.
Bringing the best local theatric performances to Maribor is a great way for all to enjoy a variety of different performances and learn about the national theatre scene.
