Every third Sunday in September, Amsterdam hosts one of the biggest running events in the world, and largest sporting weekend in the Netherlands – the famous Dam tot Damloop.
It was launched in 1985, and it has grown from a relatively small event to one involving up to 50,000 runners in 2019. The main race is 10 English miles long and starts in one city and ends in a different city – from Amsterdam to Zaandam (here is also the explanation for the name of the race). A night before the main event, on Sunday, a 5 mile race is organized for a maximum of 15,000 runners along the streets of Zaandam.
The events are part of the Dam tot Dam Weekend which is the largest sporting event in the country with over 87,000 participants.
As a part of the program, there is also a children’s race and several business competitions.
The event brings together the elite from the national and international running scene and is a great chance to enjoy both sports and the city of Amsterdam!
